Aspirin is the least expensive over-the-counter (OTC) painkiller. But it is also the most likely to cause stomach upset. This can range from trivial indigestion to life-threatening hemorrhages. I'm sure that you've heard that by taking low dosages of aspirin everyday can prevent heart attacks and colon cancers but other OTC painkillers does not and can cause bleeding into the brain (hemorrhagic stroke).
Ibuprofen (Advil,Motrin) and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are less likely than asprin to upset the stomach. Ibuprofen is especially good for menstrual pain. But these drugs including naproxen (Aleve) and ketoprofen (Orudis KT) are by no menas safe.
Each year there is an estimation of about 10,000 Americans that are hospitalized for intestinal bleeding caused by newer NSAIDs. One thousand die of such bleeding. These drugs can also cause kidney problems and reduce the effectiveness of some blood pressure medicines.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is proably the safest OTC pain pill. It is not 100% harmless. If your a heavy drinker that drinks vast amount of alcohol and take asprin or ibuprofen, your risk of a fatalintestinal hemorrhage also climbs.
Whichever pain pill you choose, just be aware that all of the drugs have side effects. Use it sparingly.
